Study Design Overview
VCE Chemistry provides students with a deep understanding of the composition, structure and properties of materials and chemical processes. Studying Chemistry develops skills in experimental investigation, quantitative analysis and critical evaluation of evidence. Units 1 and 2 introduce the diversity of matter, chemical bonding, organic chemistry and aqueous systems. Units 3 and 4 extend into energy production, chemical equilibrium, optimising industrial processes, and rigorous chemical analysis including spectroscopy and chromatography. The subject is assessed through school-based coursework (SACs) and a VCAA written examination. Chemistry is foundational for further study in medicine, pharmacy, biochemistry, environmental science and engineering. On Excelerate, every Chemistry question maps to the study design, so you can practise one topic at a time and get your work marked with the reasoning.
